Leonia didn't understand why Ludwig was being so peculiar; it wasn't like everyone's life was daises, they all had problems. Then again, Leonia did not like talking about her father and she would be in a lot of trouble if anyone found out she ran away from home.
She shrugged it off at first, but then decided to use it to her advantage. "Since you're being such a weirdy right now, I want paint and new canvases to paint on", she said, smiling.

Once Ludwig heard the girl's demands for more supplies, he froze. There was no way he could pay for that. He had enough to get by with his simple life, not enough to randomly spend on a stranger. There was also the fact that she though he was being weird. Well, that's isn't exactly new. There was one point when all the officers got together and were sharing things about themselves over drinks; Ludwig was the only one who refused. They all made fun of him, saying he was scared. There was a reason he rarely spoke with any of them.
"I'm sorry, but I don't have enough money to pay for something like that..." He hoped the girl wouldn't do something like throw a fit in the middle of the sidewalk.

He couldn't pay for all of it? Well, Leonia just had to think of something else now. Quite honestly, she had a hard time thinking of something else besides the canvases. Then it hit her. What else did she need? Food.
"That's fine. I have a better idea! Make me lunch instead!" Maybe she could even take a few things and hide them in a bag. It was terrible of her to take advantage of Ludwig, but it was tough on the streets and she was hungry!

Ludwig was taken by surprise by the girl's request for food. But at least it was something he could give her. He did feel kind of bad that he didn't have enough money to pay for what she wanted. Besides, the dogs would be excited to see someone new.
"Alright. Get the paint first, then food?" Ludwig was slightly uncomfortable, considering he never had guests before.

"Yeah, sure." Leonia was more excited about the food then the paint. Yet, she needed the paint to make paintings, which she would sell in order to get money to pay for food, but that was beside the point.
"And I want a four course meal! It better be good food too! I hope you aren't a shitty cook because that would really suck for you", Leonia laughed. Even if Ludwig was so good at cooking, it would still be food, which was more than she ever got most of the time.

Ludwig just sighed as the girl demanded even more from him. Just who did she think he was? He was a police officer just going through the motions. Stopping in front of the paint store, he was slowly regretting his decision.
"Coming in?"

Truthfully, Leonia probably wouldn't have demanded so much from any other person she bumped into. In fact, she would probably end up starting a fight with them after she would give them a nasty attitude. Yet, Leonia figured that Ludwig would do whatever she wanted, because in her mind, it seemed as if the man didn't have the backbone to stand up against the girl and tell her no.
She rolled her eyes, "Yeah whatever".

Ludwig's eyes narrowed as the girl's attitude persisted. He was finally fed up with this girl. He was trying to be nice to someone for once in his life, and of course that person decides to give him hell. That was when Ludwig decided he was done. He never said a word to her, just turned and walked down the street.
I tried, dammit. Never letting that happen again. Ludwig wished his brother were here; he would have never let Ludwig even make the decision to do something so stupid. All of a sudden, he wished he were 8 again and back in Germany. Back before everything went wrong.

Leonia was completely shocked that Ludwig was walking away. How could he? She knitted her eyebrows as she tried to think of how to react to the situation quickly. The girl grabbed a rock on the sidewalk and threw it at Ludwig's back. It wasn't like the rock was that big, but it would get his attention.
"Hmph", she crossed her arms; now she had no free food or paint. Leonia was more upset at the fact that it felt like starting at square one.

Ludwig stopped when he felt a sharp object hit his back. Turning, he saw Leonia practically pouting. Well, unfortunately for her, she ruined any chance she had at getting anything out of Ludwig. But he really shouldn't leave her empty-handed...
Walking back, Ludwig pulled out his wallet. Taking out 5 dollars, he handed it to the girl before making a 180 and going back down the street. Well, that's my good deed for the year.

Leonia stared at the five dollar bill for a second before shoving it back into Ludwig's hand before he walked away. There was something just not satisfying about receiving a five dollar bill. It wasn't the amount of the money, but Leonia wasn't really sure why she felt so unsatisfied.
"Just wait till I'm the best artist ever and he's on the street. I'll push him onto the ground", she muttered angrily.

Ludwig leaned against a wall and studied the money in his hand before putting it away. If she didn't want it, that was her problem. Heading back down the block, he headed to where he was originally going: to get coffee.
Sitting down, he couldn't help but wonder what kind of life the girl led if she was that desperate. She was most likely a runaway of some sort, definitely an artist. However, no matter the circumstance, he didn't like being pushed into buying things for the girl if she was going to be a brat about it.

Waiting till Ludwig was a bit farther down the street, Leonia followed him. There was no way she would ever let him get away with that. The girl crept into an alley, waiting for a moment to strike.
Before even waiting five minutes, Leonia grew rather impatient and she was getting hungry. Her attention was now directed at a stand that was selling bagels. Leonia waited for the man selling the bagels to look away before she swooped in and snatched one. Really, it seemed as if she were becoming a pro at this sort of thing now.
She went back into the alley and crouched down on the ground. Leonia ripped small pieces off the bagel, saving it as if it were her last meal.

After finishing his coffee, Ludwig went outside. Leaning against the wall, he surveyed the bustle of activity going on around him. Pulling out a cigarette, he lit it. After four years of living in New York, you tend to notice the usual things.
There were always stalls selling things. ALWAYS. There was no street in the entire city that didn't have someone on it at some point during the day, as Ludwig found out on night patrols. After about a month you grew used to hearing taxis all night. Ludwig also slept with every window shut. However, the one person he didn't notice was sitting in an alley nearby.

Leonia ate a few more pieces of the bagel before putting it in her bag. She stared at her bag for a minute, thinking of what to do next. The girl really wanted to steal another one to have for dinner that night.
Peering out of the corner of the alley, she observed the line steadily increasing at the bagel stand. It was a perfect time to steal another one through all the hustle and bustle of the people in the line.
She slowly came out of the alley and ran into the line, blending in with the crowd. Sneaking past the people, Leonia grabbed another bagel when the man wasn't looking. To try not to be as noticeable as last time, she calmly started to walk back to the alley.
